Splinimals

An experiemnt with using 2D shapes extruded along splines to create creatures. Everything is made from circles, flattened circles, and bezier curves (approx 18 curves per creature).

The benefits of this are that it's quick to block out large smooth organic shapes, and that you don't need a skeleton/rig to begin moving and posing your creature. Using curves helps to avoid the blobby effect that Spore-style metaball constructions have. The downsides are that the splines are separate meshes and have obvious seams, that sharp bends can result in the extruded shape clipping through itself, and that posing is a manual process. Stylised lighting and texturing can mitigate seams and clipping to a degree.

This one also uses spheres to define the major body parts.
