On Neocities
- The Lilac Lynx - my favourite neocities site. It reminds me so much of the sites I ran and used in the 90s/00s.
- Thoughtcrimes - true crime / serial killer memes. Don't click if you don't like that kind of content. (Also some neat stereograms)
- e4494s - generative art
- Blob Garden - I admire the simplicity of this site. It has blobs.
Around the web
- Atomic Shrimp - interesting youtube videos
- Braitenberg's Vehicles on archive.org - classic book on simple "vehicles" which exhibit complex behaviour
- Discord invite for Caos Coding Cave - a good resource for openc2e or any other Creatures coding
- The Book of Shaders - tutorials for understanding fragment shaders
- Procedural Content Generation in Games Textbook - what it says on the tin
- Godot - the open source game engine I use and contribute to
- Softology blog and Visions of Chaos - Fractals, Cellular Automata, Chaos Theory, etc
- Low Tech Magazine - solar powered website with interesting articles
- The Hunt for the Death Valley Germans - great writeup about tourists who went missing in Death Valley. Don't click if you don't like that kind of content.
- Dave's Garden - lots of gardening articles. This will take you to the bromeliad page.
- Liber XCV The Wake World - Then we came out into the Third House, and that was so splendid you can't imagine. In the first place it was a bright, bright, bright orange colour, and then it had flashes of light all over it, going so fast we couldn't see them, and then there was the sound of the sea and one could look through into the deep, and there was the ocean raging beneath one's feet, and strong dolphins riding on it and crying aloud, “Holy! Holy! Holy!” in such an ecstasy you can't think, and rolling and playing for sheer joy.
- The Mane Quest - do you like horse games? I like horse games. Check out the "Horse Games That Should Exist" analysis pages! Somebody make these games!
- the GALLERIE ABOMINATE (Jackal's Forge) - a very old website showcasing horrible 3D 'art'. I found this page so funny as a kid!
- Stranger Media - the website of Jeff Green who made the video games Midnight Stranger and Mode. Check out the Spaxter radio plays and the Cowboy Who TV series.
Weird and wonderful
For the slightly more 'out there' web content. Beware of NSFW.
Underrated non-web media
Stuff I think more people should watch/play/read. A place for me to put things I like but rarely see other people talking about.
- Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth - underrated adventure game. You will almost certainly need a walkthrough. The sound effects from this are embedded in my brain forever.
- Deponia - modern underrated adventure games. I really like how present the creators are here in the artwork, the narrative, the jokes and the commentary - it has a very "made by humans" feel. If you thought the latest Monkey Island felt like a sterile, corporate, child-safe version of what it used to be, play this instead.
- Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - underrated action-adventure-platformer Zelda-like. Stick with it through the 'tutorial' as it's honestly the hardest part of the game. The animations and art direction hold up incredibly well. This should be a classic but it seems like nobody played it.
- Dhalgren - it's Dhalgren. Avoid if you're sensitive to explicit/offensive/disturbing sexual content. Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand and Trouble on Triton are also good and do much more interesting things with gender than Ancillary Justice ever did.
- eXistenZ (Amazon Prime link) - this film reconfigured my entire brain when I watched it as a kid.
- Looking Backward - this now-retro-future vision featuring delivery tubes, public kitchens, covered streets and (bizarrely) a gender-segregated workforce is still intriguing today. For a more depressing vision of the future-now, see The Sheep Look Up.
